ALITA SINGS
Alita Sings was inspired by personal experience from when I was a little niñita (girl). I used to LOVE singing
in the car and felt such freedom jamming out to my favorite canciones, like Gloria Trevi’s Pelo Suelto.
I would sing and shake my hair wild, in my bliss, without any doubt in my heart. That is until one day,
my older prima (cousin) spoke the words, “You can’t sing!” As a young child, I felt such shame and self-doubt
that I began questioning all of my moves, just in case I was doing something "I can’t.” This moment in my life
was such a pivotal one because it shaped my character and I unfortunately carried that self-doubt into my
adult years. Alita Sings is my opportunity to nurture that hurt little girl and show her that there is another way
and life is oozing in love. Alita’s little brother, Sammy, shines a light for Alita to walk the path towards
self-acceptance. Through their loving and tender relationship, she learns that you don’t have to listen to
any ill-intended energy that comes your way and it’s ok to be silly. She learns that strength comes from within
and no one can take that way from you. I hope to inspire young adults to feel grounded in their courage,
stand up for themselves, and do what’s in their heart even if it means some may not approve.
This one is for my inner niña. To Alita, I tell her, “no one can take your Alita's, mijita."
